Princeton Digital acquires Yahoo’s Singapore data centre SG3

Fri, 16th Aug 2024

Princeton Digital Group (PDG) has announced the acquisition of Yahoo’s Singapore data centre, SG3. According to the press release, this move reinforces PDG’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Singapore, bolstering the company’s existing infrastructure in the nation.

Yahoo will maintain its infrastructure at SG3, and PDG will invest further in the facility to ensure high efficiency. The investment positions PDG as a third-party operator, managing the data centre’s operations.

In addition to enhancing PDG’s presence in Singapore, the acquisition also aligns with the company's broader SG+ strategy. This strategy encompasses a portfolio that includes data centre campuses in Singapore, Batam, and Johor. PDG highlighted that the addition of SG3 complements its already substantial hyperscale data centre operations in Singapore.

Rangu Salgame, Chairman, CEO, and Co-founder of PDG, commented on the strategic importance of the acquisition. “The acquisition of Yahoo’s SG3 data centre is another illustration of PDG’s three-pronged investment strategy of greenfield development, carve-outs, and acquisition. Along with a strategic asset, we gain an important customer in Yahoo and additional capacity to serve PDG’s customers. Through this acquisition, we continue to be in alignment with Singapore’s strategy of unlocking additional data centre capacity by driving greater energy efficiency at existing data centres,” he said.

PDG’s portfolio now includes more than 20 data centres with a total capacity of 1 Gigawatt (GW). The company recently inaugurated its new global headquarters in Singapore, a move that underscores its long-term commitment to the region. This acquisition adds further strategic depth to PDG’s expansive reach across Asia’s rapidly growing digital economies.

Yahoo’s Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President of Platforms Engineering, Aaron Lake, also spoke about the partnership. “As we invest in key initiatives to drive growth and innovation, our partnership with Princeton Digital Group in Singapore will continue to support Yahoo’s global strategy," he stated.

PDG’s strategy focuses on enhancing digital infrastructure through various investment methods, including greenfield projects, carve-outs, and acquisitions. This approach aims to meet the rising demand for data centre capacity while maintaining high energy efficiency standards, which aligns with Singapore’s broader objectives.

The acquisition of SG3 by PDG signifies an essential step in achieving these goals, ensuring both companies continue to benefit from their respective expertise and strategic capacities. The partnership between PDG and Yahoo is anticipated to generate further growth opportunities and sustain their positions in the highly competitive digital infrastructure sector.
