STT GDC's 2023 ESG report highlights green achievements
ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), a data centre colocation services provider headquartered in Singapore, has published its 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report. The document details the company's advancements toward its ESG targets, with significant emphasis on three overarching goals: achieving carbon-neutral data centre operations by 2030, fostering a safe, secure, diverse, and inclusive workplace, and upholding ethical and responsible business practices.
STT GDC's commitment to sustainability within the data centre industry is evident in the latest ESG report. In 2023, the company reached key environmental milestones ahead of schedule, specifically in carbon intensity reduction and the use of renewable energy. The report highlights the company's achievements and future aspirations in environmental conservation, corporate social responsibility, and ethical governance.
Bruno Lopez, President and Group Chief Executive Officer at STT GDC, remarked on the company's environmental progress, noting, "In 2023, STT GDC continued to build on its leadership as one of the world's fastest-growing data centre providers, while remaining committed to sustainability, maximising social impact, as well as conducting business with integrity. We are thrilled to share our remarkable progress in 2023, with two key interim environmental targets achieved ahead of schedule, alongside a record-low incident rate in our safety performance."
The environmental impact section of the report reveals that STT GDC achieved 62.5% renewable energy usage across the group in 2023, three years ahead of the initial target date. The company also accomplished a 45.6% reduction in carbon intensity from its 2021 baseline and a 9.5% reduction in average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) against the 2020 baseline. Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) saw an 18.2% year-on-year improvement in 2023, culminating in a total 30% enhancement from the 2020 baseline.
On the social front, STT GDC reported zero work-related serious injuries or fatalities since 2020, with a total recordable incident rate of 0.06. Several offices, including those in India, Singapore, and the Philippines, received the Great Place to Work certification in 2023. Additionally, the Women@Work Development Programme was introduced in India to empower women employees both professionally and personally.
STT GDC is also dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of business ethics. The company upholds a zero-tolerance policy towards bribery, kickbacks, and corruption. All representatives of STT GDC are required to conduct business activities in compliance with company policies and applicable anti-corruption laws. In 2023, 100% of the employees completed anti-corruption training, with no reported incidents of corruption. Moreover, the company launched its Supplier Code of Conduct to align its suppliers with its ESG principles.
As part of its responsible business practices, almost 50% of STT GDC's data centres are certified as Green Buildings, under national and international schemes such as BCA Greenmark or LEED. This percentage also serves as a Key Performance Indicator in STT GDC's Sustainability-linked Financing Framework.
Covering all operations under STT GDC's control from 1 January to 31 December 2023, the ESG report provides comprehensive insights into the company's sustainable practices, community engagements, and commitment to ethical governance.
