Google Cloud and Capgemini collaborate with Malaysia's largest electricity utility
Capgemini and Google Cloud have announced a collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the largest electricity utility in Malaysia.
The collaboration aims to design an enterprise-wide Application Programming Interface (API) strategy and implement Google Clouds Apigee API Management Platform, which allows the company to enable new agile ways of working.
"The more open digital backbone now provides the flexibility TNB needs to connect with the outside world, generate new revenue streams, and accelerate innovation," the company's say.
TNB serves a massive customer base of over 9.4 million citizens in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Labuan. It says to remain responsive to the needs of its stakeholders and the marketplace; it was looking to modernise its technological infrastructure to make way for new integration technology, such as microservices.
To deploy and scale APIs and introduce new agile ways of working to accelerate its digital maturity from within, TNB launched an enterprise-wide API adoption program to build in collaboration with Capgemini and Google Cloud.
The process involved updating its existing API products, expanding its in-house digital capabilities, and exploring non-regulatory revenue streams from API monetisation leveraging an API Management tool. Capgemini also facilitated a cultural mindset shift to drive API literacy across TNB for better knowledge sharing and collaboration on API development.
"The agile and flexible infrastructure has helped TNB to unlock newly consolidated data and services, opening them for broader consumption by internal and external customers, as well as enabling reusability, enhanced security, and the strengthening of governance requirements," the company says.
Fazil Ibrahim, chief information officer, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, says to achieve its strategic aspiration of becoming the leading provider of sustainable energy solutions, both in Malaysia and internationally, TNB is constantly looking into opportunities to capitalise on the impact of technology disruptions to unlock new growth.
"We're glad that with Capgemini and Google Cloud participating in our transformation journey, we're able to lay a strong foundation for TNB to react more effectively and swiftly to market-competitive pressures, as well as to stay responsive to changing customers demands," he says.
Olaf Pietschner, CEO of Capgemini in Asia-Pacific and member of the Group Executive Committee, says, "API-led connectivity enables enterprises to seamlessly integrate multiple technologies to create unique and valuable offerings for customers and the broader ecosystem.
"By leveraging our Google Cloud expertise, Capgemini offered a robust set of end-to-end services for API strategy to deliver on TNBs digital vision," he adds.
While Jagannath Narendran, the director of Business Application Platform, Google Cloud in Asia Pacific, says together with Capgemini, they're excited about the value they can deliver to support TNB on their digital transformation journey.
"With Apigee, TNB can rapidly build and monetise APIs that are secure and scalable and expand the canvas of possibilities for both TNB and its customers," he says.
