DE-CIX and International Gateway Co have formed a joint venture to launch DE-CIX Bangkok, an internet exchange due to be ready for service in 2027.

The venture will establish DE-CIX Thailand in Bangkok, building and operating the exchange as part of DE-CIX's Southeast Asian network.

The project will be the first internet exchange in Thailand to be directly interconnected with DE-CIX exchanges elsewhere in the ASEAN region. Networks connected in Bangkok will be able to peer directly with networks in Singapore, Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Jakarta through a single regional platform.

The launch will extend DE-CIX's Southeast Asian platform to a seventh metropolitan market. The countries of mainland Southeast Asia - Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar - account for about half of all end users in the ASEAN region, according to the operator.

IGC will provide connectivity to the Bangkok exchange and act as a reseller for customers across mainland Southeast Asia. The exchange will also connect to DE-CIX's global backbone, linking more than 4,600 networks across the Americas, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Regional reach

Bangkok is one of Southeast Asia's faster-growing digital infrastructure markets, with submarine connectivity into the Pacific and Indian Oceans and a growing data centre sector. Its location also makes it a gateway to mainland Southeast Asia, DE-CIX said.

DE-CIX already operates exchanges in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia through its distributed ASEAN platform. Close to 150 networks are connected, or in the process of connecting, across that regional interconnection fabric, it said.

"Thailand is the next logical step in our Southeast Asian growth strategy," said Ivo Ivanov, Chief Executive Officer of DE-CIX. "The country has all the ingredients to become the gateway to mainland Southeast Asia and one of the region's leading digital connectivity hubs, serving millions of people. Together with IGC, we are creating an environment where networks in Thailand can interconnect locally while gaining seamless access to one of Southeast Asia's richest digital ecosystems. Customers will benefit from lower latency, greater resilience, and direct access to cloud, AI, content, and network providers across the DE-CIX platform."

DE-CIX operates internet exchanges in 60 locations worldwide and says its services are accessible from data centres in more than 600 cities. Founded in 1995, it is one of the largest operators in the sector, with DE-CIX Frankfurt alone handling more than 48 exabytes of data traffic a year as of 2025.

IGC, a subsidiary of ALT Telecom, provides wholesale bandwidth, IP transit and network services for domestic and international traffic in Thailand. It operates more than 12,000 kilometres of optical fibre nationwide and has network-to-network interfaces across 12 active border crossings, linking 42 operators in neighbouring countries and Thailand.

Its infrastructure also includes connectivity to more than 10 data centres in Thailand and licences covering five cable landing stations. DE-CIX plans to use that domestic and cross-border footprint to extend access to the new exchange beyond Bangkok.

"The establishment of DE-CIX Bangkok will create new opportunities for customers to exchange traffic not only locally but regionally, while reducing latency, improving network performance, and providing access to one of the most interconnected ecosystems in Southeast Asia," said Supat Eamwiwat, Chief Executive Officer of IGC. "We are excited to partner with DE-CIX to support the next phase of Thailand's digital growth."
