DayOne plans major 560 MW data centre near Helsinki
DayOne has set out early-stage plans for a new data centre development in Klaukkala, in the municipality of Nurmijärvi, as it expands its footprint in Finland.
The Singapore-headquartered developer and operator said the municipality has started handling a preliminary sale of the planned site with DayOne. The company described the work as early-stage and said the project remains subject to approvals and permits.
DayOne has already announced other projects in the country. It previously stated an investment commitment of about EUR 1.2 billion for a project in Lahti. It has also announced a joint venture project in Kouvola with a local partner.
Scale and jobs
In Nurmijärvi, DayOne said the project has tentative phased development potential of up to 560 MW of total grid power. The company also gave employment estimates tied to construction and operations.
At peak construction, DayOne estimated up to about 1,000 workers. For operations, it said the site could support a gradual ramp-up of up to 700 skilled positions over the long term.
The planned location sits in the Sudentulli area of northern Klaukkala. Zoning work is under way and the municipality has not made a final land-use decision, DayOne said.
Fortum agreement
DayOne has signed a site securing and development agreement with Fortum, Finland's largest energy producer. DayOne said Fortum will assist with zoning processes and facilitate grid connection planning.
The company said the project requires a permit from the Ministry of Defence, alongside municipal and other regulatory approvals. It added that it has been in active dialogue with Finnish authorities and has informed relevant ministries of its plans.
DayOne described the planned site as a "high value-adding data center". It said the project aligns with Finland's national data centre roadmap and objectives for sustainable digital infrastructure development.
Local framework
DayOne said it is preparing a framework agreement connected to the Nurmijärvi project. It said the framework will cover local education and cooperation with institutions including Aalto University.
The company also said the framework plans include regional environmental protection and culture initiatives through cooperation with local stakeholders.
Funding backdrop
DayOne outlined recent financing arrangements as it pursues growth in Finland and other markets. It said it secured a mezzanine financing facility of up to EUR 1 billion from Brookfield and a global sovereign investor. The company said the facility supports its expansion across Finland and Europe.
DayOne also said it entered into definitive agreements for more than US$ 2.0 billion in Series C equity financing. The company said the funding supports development of its platforms in key markets, including Finland.
DayOne develops and operates data centres in several markets. It listed Singapore, Johor in Malaysia, Batam in Indonesia, Greater Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Finland.
The Nurmijärvi plan now moves through zoning and permitting processes, alongside grid connection planning under the agreement with Fortum.
