Alibaba Cloud named leader for GenAI cloud in Omdia report
Alibaba Cloud has been named a leader in a new Omdia report evaluating generative artificial intelligence cloud providers across Asia and Oceania.
The report, titled "Market Radar: GenAI Cloud Titans in Asia & Oceania 2025", positions Alibaba Cloud in the "Leader" quadrant based on its generative AI capabilities and product portfolio. Alibaba Cloud was among four companies to receive the "Leader" designation out of nine vendors reviewed.
Omdia's evaluation covered nine key dimensions: GenAI models, model optimisation, GenAI infrastructure, development platforms, deployment, security, and developer community engagement. Among these, Alibaba Cloud received the highest "Advanced" rating in seven out of nine categories, the most among all leaders featured in the report.
GenAI influence
The Omdia report highlights that Alibaba Cloud is recognised for its full-stack generative AI solutions, comprehensive and developer-friendly platform, and open-source initiatives. It states that Alibaba Cloud's Model Studio and Platform for AI (PAI) provide enterprises with an accessible environment for building and deploying GenAI applications. This is further supported by the company's PAI-Lingjun Intelligent Computing Service infrastructure.
"Alibaba Cloud offers end-to-end technology capabilities, including foundation models, GenAI platform, infrastructure, and applications. This positions it as a significant competitor in the global GenAI landscape," said Omdia in the report.
Alibaba Cloud's reach has expanded across verticals, with more than 290,000 customers as of January 2025 using its Qwen models via Model Studio. Sectors adopting these models include robotics, healthcare, education, finance, and automotive industries.
Open-source activity
Omdia also noted Alibaba Cloud's role in the open-source AI community. Since August 2023, the company has released over 200 advanced AI models, with the Qwen family achieving more than 400 million downloads on platforms, including Hugging Face and ModelScope. Third parties have built over 140,000 models based on Qwen, which the company claims positions it among the most prominent AI model series globally.
Jingren Zhou, Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, emphasised the importance of the company's open-source approach.
"GenAI has captured the imagination of businesses in Asia and around the world, and we are grateful to be recognized for our leadership in helping companies implement its capabilities. Our commitment to open source is central to this, driving innovation through one of the largest AI ecosystems in the world. As we accelerate into the AI era, we want to make it as easy as possible for companies to harness the power of this technology and will continue to enhance our model family and solutions to ensure they have the support they need to thrive," said Jingren Zhou.
Regional market growth
The Omdia report provides insight into the broader GenAI software market in the region. It estimates the revenue for GenAI software in Asia and Oceania will reach USD $5.5 billion in 2025. This market is projected to expand to USD $19.8 billion by 2029. As of the time of the report, 27% of enterprises in the region are deploying GenAI solutions, with another 33% piloting GenAI within at least one area of their business.
Omdia's findings indicate momentum for enterprise adoption of generative AI solutions in Asia and Oceania, and highlight Alibaba Cloud's engagement with developers and enterprises through its GenAI platforms and ecosystem.
