Akamai announces new products across security, computing
Akamai has announced a series of new products and updates to existing products across its security and compute product lines, including its entry into the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market.
Linode Managed Database is Akamai's first IaaS product, and the company says this offering will make database deployment more straightforward, assisting developers in reducing risk, increasing efficiency, and minimising the complexity associated with manual management of production database clusters.
Additional product offerings include the release of Audience Hijacking Protector and a range of other new features for developers and cybersecurity professionals.
"This week's product announcements and updates are all about one thing: powering and protecting life online," Akamai product marketing global vice president Ari Weil says.
"We rely on internet services more than ever, and at Akamai, we're proud to offer our customers the tools to help deliver digital experiences quickly and safely.
"We are particularly pleased to launch Linode Managed Database, the first product in our new compute range, giving our customers access to a broader range of tools no matter their computing workload, and making Akamai the world's most distributed compute platform, from cloud to edge," Weil adds.
Linode Managed Database
Linode says managed databases have been the most requested product by its customers, and Linode Managed Database service represents Akamai's first product launch in its compute line of business following its acquisition of Linode in March.
Furthermore, Akamai says this offering reinforces its mission to develop a world-leading compute platform from cloud to edge.
The product launch will see Akamai offer Linode Managed Database for MySQL across all of Linode's 11 global data centers.
Additionally, the offering will include PostgreSQL, Redis, and MongoDB support, available in the second quarter of 2022.
Features of each supported managed database include flat-rate pricing, security and recovery measures, flexible deployment options, and high availability cluster options.
Audience Hijacking Protector and other security features
Akamai says Audience Hijacking Protector is designed for online businesses to maximise revenue opportunities and minimise marketing fraud in the buying journey.
Noting the rapidly growing pace of online retail, the company says audience hijacking is a new widespread, customer-side phenomenon that security teams for online brands are coming up against.
Audience hijacking is the presence of unauthorised ads and pop-ups designed to lure shoppers away from online stores, resulting in a loss of revenue for the online brand.
Additionally, Akamai revealed various new application security features intended to assist businesses in defending customers from threats across all online environments, such as internet browsers and mobile applications, during API interactions and at the edge.
Workflow improvements for developers with EdgeWorkers
Acknowledging the shift of many computing workloads to the edge, Akamai is also improving its EdgeWorkers product. This offering allows development teams to utilise the Akamai network to create microservices and access secure and fast-acting computation at the edge.
New integrations, as well as higher resource tier limits and support for customers using Standard TLS, will see developers more easily able to build, execute and debug EdgeWorkers functions.
Akamai's new Hello Akamai! prototyping sandbox environment is now available for anyone interested in trying EdgeWorkers.
