Volvo Penta launches G17 gas genset for data centres

Volvo Penta has added a new natural gas genset engine, the G17, to its industrial power generation range, with data centres and other mission-critical sites among the target applications.

The company positioned the engine as an option for operators that want gas-fuelled backup power and a route to use renewable natural gas. It described the launch as part of a broader shift in its power generation portfolio.

Volvo Penta said the G17 sits alongside its existing D17 genset engine and shares a common platform. The new model uses spark ignition and a 17-litre, six-cylinder layout.

Kristian Vekas, Product Manager for Industrial Power Generation at Volvo Penta, framed the product in the context of multiple energy pathways.

"The energy transition isn't one-size-fits-all. "The G17 expands our power generation portfolio with a gas option engineered to meet rising global demand for dependable, lower-emission solutions that are backed by the strength of the Volvo Group and our global support network. Fuel options

Volvo Penta said the G17 can run on pipeline-quality conventional natural gas and renewable natural gas. The company presented that dual-fuel option as a way for operators to switch fuel types within the same engine platform.

In its product description, Volvo Penta said the engine connects directly to existing gas infrastructure. It said this approach simplifies installation and removes the need for additional fuel-conditioning systems.

"The G17 is engineered to deliver lower emissions without trade-offs," said Vekas. "Its flexible fuel capability helps reduce carbon intensity while maintaining the power density, responsiveness and durability customers expect from Volvo Penta's heavy-duty platform."

Power rating

Volvo Penta said the engine delivers approximately 450 kWe at 1,800 rpm. It said the design targets a compact footprint and a smaller enclosure than alternative configurations.

The company said the smaller enclosure can cut installation space and reduce housing material costs. It also highlighted load acceptance and fast power delivery during demand spikes or grid transitions.

Emissions controls

Volvo Penta said the G17 targets reduced emissions, including NOx and particulate matter. It said the engine uses advanced combustion controls, low-pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation and a high-efficiency three-way catalyst.

The company also said the package complies with US EPA stationary power application standards. It positioned the compliance as relevant for operators working within air quality rules and environmental reporting requirements.

Data centre fit

Volvo Penta described the engine platform as compact and stackable. It said that layout suits space-constrained environments, including data centres.

The company also said operators can integrate the natural gas engine into broader energy strategies that include renewable fuels and battery systems for energy storage. It described a modular approach that can scale as demand changes.

Volvo Penta cited potential lower fuel costs compared with diesel and reduced noise levels. It linked those factors to operating economics and local community considerations around backup power infrastructure.

Platform and service

Volvo Penta said the G17 is built on Volvo Group technology used in heavy-duty applications. It said the engine has an equivalent footprint and cooling system to the D16 and D17, which it said supports installation planning and retrofit opportunities.

The company said it supplies the engine as a fully integrated OEM solution. It also said a streamlined component layout and fewer cylinders improve serviceability and can reduce total cost of ownership across the engine lifecycle.

Volvo Penta said its global dealer network will support the G17, in line with its wider power generation range. It linked dealer support to service coverage across deployment locations.

"With the G17 gas engine, Volvo Penta is expanding its ability to deliver integrated energy solutions that combine proven technology, emerging fuel pathways and strong service," said Vekas. "This approach gives customers a reliable, scalable foundation to progress with their long-term energy goals."

Volvo Penta said it showcased the G17 natural gas engine at PowerGen in San Antonio in January.
