Targa Telematics shifts core systems to Equinix hubs

Fri, 27th Feb 2026

Targa Telematics has moved its infrastructure to Equinix data centres in Milan and Frankfurt as it prepares for further international expansion and stricter requirements on where data is stored and processed.

The connected mobility technology provider migrated its systems to Equinix's ML5 facility in Milan and FR4 in Frankfurt, citing operational continuity, security and the ability to scale services as demand changes across markets.

Data sovereignty and residency rules are increasingly shaping how cross-border platforms are designed and operated. Providers serving fleet operators, insurers and rental firms often process vehicle location, diagnostics and usage data across multiple jurisdictions, making data centre location and governance a material operational issue.

Targa Telematics operates in several European countries and in Chile, and includes the Viasat Group. It develops telematics and connected mobility platforms for use cases including insurance telematics, asset and fleet management, and remote diagnostics for vehicles and equipment.

Milan and Frankfurt

The new set-up uses Equinix colocation facilities in Italy and Germany. Targa Telematics described the move as part of its broader technology roadmap and said it wanted a more resilient infrastructure base for long-term growth.

It also highlighted service continuity and security. Equinix says its facilities use redundant critical systems and formal operational processes, and points to physical security controls such as biometric access, security checks and video surveillance.

Equinix operates data centres in multiple countries. Large operators often pitch geographic reach as a way for customers to place workloads near users, comply with local rules, and reduce dependency on single sites or regions.

Sustainability focus

Targa Telematics also framed the move as part of its sustainability approach. Equinix reports energy-efficiency and emissions-reduction initiatives, including increased renewable energy use and projects linked to heat recovery and reuse.

Equinix holds environmental and energy management certifications including ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. It has also cited external ratings, including inclusion in the CDP Climate Change A-List and an EcoVadis Gold medal.

Targa Telematics said it will use sustainability metrics available through Equinix reporting in its own sustainability reporting. For companies with published ESG targets, supplier reporting can influence how they measure and evidence progress across operations and IT estates.

Migration partner

Gruppo Zenit worked on the migration and now provides operational support. The managed service provider handled migration management and ongoing environment monitoring, according to Targa Telematics.

The work included defining a target architecture and moving workloads to the new sites. Zenit also provides 24/7 support, including infrastructure and application monitoring, Network Operations Centre services, incident management, patching and backup management.

Such arrangements are common for mid-sized and large organisations with mixed application estates and data pipelines. Providers often rely on partners to manage cutovers, reduce downtime risk and maintain observability as systems move between hosting environments.

Security and continuity

Targa Telematics linked the project to its operational priorities as it expands into new territories. For connected mobility providers, service availability affects customers that rely on near real-time data feeds for fleet operations, usage-based insurance programmes and asset tracking.

The company said the migration raised expectations for availability and cybersecurity while addressing country-specific requirements on where data resides.

"The migration to Equinix represents a strategic step in our international expansion and continuous service improvement. Together with Equinix and Zenith, we are raising our performance, availability and cybersecurity standards, while ensuring that our customers can operate in countries where specific data residency requirements apply," said Carlo Stefanelli, Chief Technology Officer, Targa Telematics.

Targa Telematics now runs its infrastructure from Equinix sites in Italy and Germany, with Zenit continuing to provide round-the-clock monitoring and operational support as it expands into additional regions.
