Synology launches DSM 7.3 with advanced AI & security tools

Wed, 8th Oct 2025

Synology has announced the release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.3, introducing updates aimed at improving storage efficiency, security, collaborative features, and storage flexibility.

The new version of DSM brings what Synology describes as significant advances for handling the modern challenges of data management. Kenneth Hsu, Director of the System Group at Synology, said, "As data grows rapidly, advanced solutions are needed to manage, process, and unlock its full value. DSM 7.3 helps customers confidently address evolving data management challenges on a platform that is secure, reliable, and ready to support AI transformation."

Data tiering enhancements

One of the central updates is Synology Tiering, a feature that automatically manages files between different types of storage based on how often they are accessed. This service keeps frequently used, or "hot," data on faster storage devices, while rarely accessed, or "cold," data is moved to lower-cost storage solutions. Organisations can customise this process according to modification times or access frequency, allowing for planned and efficient management of storage resources.

Security updates

DSM 7.3 places continued focus on system security, building on the more than 50 proactive security updates implemented in the past year. The latest release further strengthens security measures by integrating risk indicators such as KEV, EPSS, and LEV. These tools aim to improve threat prioritisation and bolster protection against cyber threats.

The company's statement highlights that "Security has always been the top priority in DSM development. Over the past 12 months, DSM has received more than 50 proactive security updates. In DSM 7.3, security is further reinforced with the adoption of industry-recognized risk indicators, including KEV, EPSS, and LEV, for stronger threat prioritization and protection."

Collaboration and productivity

Upgrades to the Office Suite within DSM target team collaboration and communication. Synology Drive now offers shared labels, streamlined file requests, and improved file locking capabilities that aim to facilitate smoother team workflows. Meanwhile, the MailPlus software enhances security with a new email moderation feature and now supports domain sharing, which helps unify user identities across different infrastructure setups.

AI and data privacy

With the continued adoption of AI technologies, Synology AI Console has now been launched on over 430,000 systems since August 2025. The platform enables on-premises, AI-powered collaboration and management, intended to keep sensitive data managed locally. DSM 7.3 adds options for custom data masking and filtering, allowing users to protect confidential information before it is sent to third-party AI providers. Synology stated, "Synology AI Console further introduces custom data masking and filtering, allowing users to safeguard sensitive information locally before transmitting data to third-party AI providers, enhancing both security and workflow reliability."

There are also plans to include support for all OpenAI-compatible APIs in upcoming versions, which would allow organisations to connect private AI infrastructure with DSM 7.3 while maintaining data privacy and control of sensitive content.

Expanded storage options

Synology continues its commitment to reliable storage solutions through rigorous validation of both hardware and software. The company has announced ongoing efforts to work with third-party drive manufacturers to expand the range of approved storage devices. Users of 2025 DiskStation Plus, Value, and J Series models running DSM 7.3 will be able to install and create storage pools using third-party drives. Creation of M.2 based storage pools and cache will, however, still require use of drives listed on the hardware compatibility list.

The company commented, "Synology is collaborating with drive manufacturers to expand the range of certified storage media, delivering more reliable options. In the meantime, 2025 model-year DiskStation Plus, Value, and J Series running DSM 7.3 will support installation and storage pool creation with third-party drives. Together with the existing support for third-party drive migration, DSM will provide users with greater flexibility in managing their storage deployments."

Synology confirmed that DSM 7.3 is now available for download. The updates are designed to address contemporary storage demands, rising security requirements, and the ongoing integration of AI into business workflows.
