StarHub & Global Switch launch low-latency network in Singapore

Mon, 27th May 2024

StarHub has entered into a collaboration with Global Switch, a notable operator and developer of large-scale, carrier, and cloud-neutral data centres across the Asia-Pacific and Europe regions. The partnership centers around the launch of a Low-Latency Data Centre Connect network in Singapore, enhancing connectivity between Global Switch Singapore's Woodlands and Tai Seng data centres.

This initiative is underpinned by StarHub's Cloud Infinity programme, a hybrid multi-cloud platform aimed at delivering ultra-low-latency connectivity. The advanced fibre network installed within the data centres is fully diverse, meaning it ensures maximum reliability through multiple pathways. Additionally, the network is equipped with software-defined network capabilities that allow for rapid scaling to meet the increasing bandwidth needs of over-the-top (OTT) and cloud data services and applications. Importantly, the network also features quantum encryption-ready technology, providing a robust defence against sophisticated cyber-attacks.

Tan Kit Yong, Head of Enterprise Business Group at StarHub, expressed pride in the collaboration with Global Switch. "Aligned with our DARE+ initiative and Cloud Infinity programme, StarHub is proud to collaborate with Global Switch and leverage their ecosystems of data centre network and operations. With Low Latency Data Centre Connect, we aim to offer a purpose-built fibre network with minimal hops and latest state-of-the-art optical technology, supporting mission-critical application sensitive workloads to address customers' latency-sensitive business needs," Tan Kit Yong stated.

One of the locations benefiting from this collaboration is the Tai Seng data centre, which is recognised as one of the most interconnected data centres in Singapore and a crucial connectivity hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Global Switch's facilities in Woodlands and Tai Seng will now provide secure on-demand connectivity to a global network of key data centre ecosystems and submarine cable Points of Presence (PoPs), ensuring seamless connectivity for data-intensive operations.

Terence Teo, Managing Director of Global Switch Singapore, highlighted the significance of the partnership. "Global Switch is proud to support StarHub's launch of Low Latency Data Centre Connect in our Woodlands and Tai Seng data centres. Our data centres in Singapore are home to the network PoPs of all major international telecommunications companies," he said. Teo also noted that Tai Seng hosts numerous major submarine cable systems, making it a pivotal location for internet service providers, content delivery networks, and hyperscalers. "Virtually all ISPs, content delivery and hyperscalers are hosted at our two data centres in Singapore. Having Low Latency Data Centre Connect at our sites will enable all other data centres and cable landing stations in Singapore to connect to Global Switch Singapore for access to content and interconnections," Teo added.
