Seagate, Phison partnership to improve data center offering
Seagate and Phison have announced plans to expand their SSD portfolio to assist data center customers in reducing total cost ownership (TCO).
The companies explain that the new SSDs will allow businesses to lower TCO through increased storage density, decreased power consumption and higher performance.
Additionally, Seagate and Phison have entered a long-term partnership to reinforce the development cycle and distribution of enterprise-class SSDs.
This adds to a partnership that has been in place since 2017, which has seen the two companies collaborate on Seagate's mainstream SATA SSD products and has continued through the company's line of FireCuda consumer gaming NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 SSDs and NAS NVMe SSDs.
The companies add that this new focus comes from a growing demand from businesses for higher density and faster, more intelligent storage infrastructure to work alongside HHD storage to facilitate comprehensive business applications such as hyperscale data centers, high-performance computing and AI.
"We integrated Seagate's 40-plus years of market-leading enterprise storage expertise with Phison's nimble ability to create highly customised SSDs to meet the ever-evolving needs of the enterprise storage market," Seagate Technology business and marketing senior vice president Jeff Fochtman says.
"Seagate is extremely excited to work with Phison on developing advanced SSD technology. Our selective focus allows us to serve the broad performance-driven enterprise SSD market while continuing our leadership in the specialised premium gaming SSD segment."
Phison Electronics specialises in NAND Flash controller integrated circuits and storage solutions for consumer, industrial and enterprise markets.
Moreover, the company offers a range of services, including controller ASIC and firmware design, system integration, IP licensing, and turnkey solutions that cover applications across SSD (PCIe/SATA/PATA), eMMC, UFS, SD, and USB interfaces.
Seagate and Phison will work together to improve the industry's enterprise-class SSD product offerings.
In particular, the companies will be focusing on ensuring best-in-class performance while maintaining cost-effectiveness and overall efficiency.
Furthermore, each new product offering will be optimised for specific workloads, environments, and use cases and designed to address a customer's individual technical needs.
"Phison is proud to partner with Seagate to expand our enterprise SSD product line. Our leading in-house ASIC technology, coupled with engineering excellence, complements Seagate's deep industry knowledge," Phison Electronics CTO Sebastien Jean says.
"In a show of commitment to this partnership, in 2020, we opened a development center in Broomfield, Colorado.
"Together, we will deliver winning solutions for a wide range of applications including Artificial Intelligence, cloud storage, and 5G edge computing."
