Lenovo DCG expands ThinkSystem server line

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Lenovo Data Center Group has this month launched two new socket servers, expanding its portfolio powered by AMD's EPYC 7002 Series processors.

The new ThinkSystem SR645 and SR665 two-socket server platforms are designed with more CPU cores, and a larger memory footprint, as well as I/O connectivity for performance workloads.

Lenovo Data Center Group points to industries such as financial services, manufacturing and retail, which require faster transaction processing, greater grid computing, and better data analytics while improving total cost of ownership.

The company designed its new ThinkSystem platforms to deliver higher performance workloads and improved efficiency.

Lenovo Data Center Group's server, storage and software defined infrastructure vice president and general manager, Kamran Amini, says the new servers are designed for workloads including advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, in-memory databased, and virtualisation.

“Customers have the ability to handle the increasing data requirements of today's workloads with the scalability to grow with their business.

For example, retailers can use video analytics to identify locations in stores that attract the most foot traffic. Those locations can be used to plan product placement.

In high performance computing (HPC) environments such as scientific researchers, higher throughput leads to faster results – and possibly earlier discoveries.
In manufacturing, processes rely on efficiency, therefore the ability to quickly process analytics data allows for better quality control and improved throughput. This results in higher yields and better forecasting of warranty needs.

In financial services, typically, servers are in a premium space located near the exchanges so saving rack space is paramount.

“The new Lenovo ThinkSystem two-socket servers tap into the power of our 2nd Gen AMD EPYCTM
processors to make a meaningful impact in the areas where performance, space and efficiency
are critical to business outcomes,” comments AMD server business unit senior vice president and general manager, Dan McNamara.

“With the expansion of its AMD EPYCTM-based product line, Lenovo customers now have more options for systems that address today's demanding enterprise workloads.

The ThinkSystem SR645 and SR665 servers feature:

  • Next-generation technologies, including PCIe 4 support, which doubles I/O bandwidth. Lenovo says this can help to eliminate potential bottlenecks found in previous generation servers
  • Increased networking capabilities essential for I/O intensive applications
  • Increased GPU support (up to 8x 75W NVidia T4s) allowing customers to efficiently implement video analytics and inference solutions for artificial intelligence
  • Increased onboard storage up to 40 2.5” drives or up to 32 NVMe drives allowing for dense software defined storage solutions.

All products are secured by Lenovo ThinkShield and available through Lenovo TruScale.
