Google Cloud opens Bangkok region in USD $1 billion push

Wed, 28th Jan 2026

Google Cloud has launched a cloud region in Bangkok, expanding its infrastructure footprint in Thailand and adding in-country compute capacity for local organisations.

Google Cloud said the Bangkok region forms part of a USD $1 billion investment in technical infrastructure in Thailand. It also pointed to strategic initiatives including PanyaThAI, ChaiyoGCP and plans for a connectivity hub in South Thailand.

Google Cloud cited research that forecast the Bangkok cloud region would contribute THB 1.4 trillion, or USD $41 billion, in economic value over the next five years. The same research projected support for an average of 130,000 jobs per year over that period.

"Our new Thailand cloud region brings the same world-class infrastructure that powers Google's global services directly to Thai enterprises, startups, and public sector institutions. With access to Google Cloud's leading cloud and AI technologies, we're giving Thai organizations a foundation for growth in the AI era, allowing them to innovate faster with greater control over their data," said Karthik Narain, Chief Product and Business Officer, Google Cloud.

Data residency

Google Cloud positioned the Bangkok region as relevant for the public sector and regulated industries such as financial services. It said the region consists of interconnected compute capacity located in Thailand. Google Cloud said this directly addresses data residency requirements that have constrained cloud adoption.

Google Cloud said customers can store and process specified data within Thailand's borders. It said the service uses default, multi-layered data encryption. Google Cloud also referenced alignment with local regulations, including the Personal Data Protection Act.

The company said the region has three zones. It said this supports reliability for mission-critical systems. Google Cloud also cited research that found an average Thai organisation could cut unplanned application downtime by more than 50% by moving from on-premises environments to Google Cloud.

Kasikorn Business-Technology Group is among the Thai organisations commenting on the launch.

"KBTG is on a mission to become the region's premier technology organization, and Google's new cloud region in Thailand is the catalyst for advancing that ambition. First, the reduced network latency and enhanced performance it delivers will enable faster, highly responsive digital banking services for our users. Second, it streamlines our compliance with the Bank of Thailand's (BOT) regulatory standards, providing us with robust control over data residency and privacy. Finally, it allows us to optimize our cloud architecture for cost efficiency while maintaining the highest security standards, ultimately empowering us to accelerate our pace of innovation to deliver tangible value for the people of Thailand," said Voranuch Dejakaisaya, Executive Chairman, KASIKORN Business-Technology Group.

Network links

Google Cloud said the Bangkok region integrates with Google's global network, which it described as spanning more than 200 countries and territories. The company said the network includes 7.75 million kilometres of terrestrial and subsea fibre. It also referenced TalayLink, a subsea cable that will connect Australia and Thailand.

Google Cloud said the network provides high-bandwidth connectivity and millisecond-level latency. It said this supports faster application response times for end-users in Thailand.

For Thai companies with international ambitions, Google Cloud said the network supports movement of large volumes of data between 43 Google Cloud regions internationally. It also said customers can connect with their own on-premises data centres and other cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Google Cloud cited research that suggested a large Thai enterprise could reduce annual technology spending by more than 20% on average by migrating core mission-critical systems to Google Cloud.

AI services

Google Cloud said the Bangkok region provides local infrastructure for running and managing applications. It also said customers can access Google Cloud AI products and models that are available across its global network, including Gemini models.

The company referenced Vertex AI as its AI development platform. It also highlighted Gemini 3, plus generative media models including Imagen and Veo. Google Cloud also referenced Gemini Enterprise as a platform for AI agents delivered through a chat interface.

PanyaThAI started with 15 charter member organisations. Google Cloud listed those organisations as Bitazza, Chulalongkorn University, Dhipaya Group Holdings, Finnomena, Ocean Life Insurance, SE-Education (SE-ED), Shop Global E-Commerce Company Limited, Siam Piwat, Sansiri, Skooldio, the Stock Exchange of Thailand, Thai Wacoal, TISCO Financial Group, TOPS and True Digital Group.

True Digital Group described the Bangkok region as significant for Thailand's direction in AI and data.

"The launch of Google's local cloud region is a watershed moment for Thailand's AI-driven future. For True Digital Group, this provides the secure bedrock to unify vast datasets and translate them into meaningful real-world impact. It will also fuel our AI-first direction, enabling the delivery of more personalized digital services for every Thai consumer. Crucially, it democratizes access to Google Cloud's best-in-class capabilities, empowering SMEs, enterprises, and the public sector alike to innovate with confidence. By fusing connectivity with cloud-based data analytics and AI, we are turning technology into practical solutions that elevate the lives of our people and propel the economy forward," said Ekaraj Panjavinin, President, True Digital Group.

Skills pipeline

Alongside the region launch, Google Cloud said Thai developers have completed more than 110,000 hands-on training labs through ChaiyoGCP. It said more than 70% of labs completed in Thailand in the past year focused on AI.

Google Cloud said ChaiyoGCP aims to lift completed labs to at least 125,000 in the first half of 2026. It said it will do this through engagements with six Google Developer Groups in Thailand.

Google also launched Google Skills, a free training platform that aggregates more than 3,000 courses and labs. It said the platform includes content from Google Cloud, Google DeepMind, Grow with Google and Google for Education. Google said it will include training for non-technical learners, including preparation for Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader certification.

Google cited research that found 86% of Thais expressed interest in additional training to apply AI more effectively in their job roles.
