Figma to launch Australian data hosting & new governance tools
Figma has announced plans to offer data residency in Australia, enabling local customers to store all file data within the country, alongside the introduction of a new Governance+ security bundle for enterprise users.
Local data hosting
The move marks Australia as Figma's first data-residency region in the Asia-Pacific region. Company representatives explained that the decision to introduce local hosting is in response to strong customer demand for on-shore control, rather than a regulatory requirement. Local data hosting is expected to open access for public sector, banking, and healthcare teams seeking to meet data-sovereignty and compliance obligations.
Figma will allow file data - including content from FigJam, Make, Sites, Buzz, and Slides - to be hosted within Australia, with local file hosting targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. This new Australian data hosting option extends Figma's existing data residency offerings for enterprise users in Europe and the United States.
"Australia is among the fastest growing markets for Figma in Asia Pacific. We've heard from Australian customers who deeply care about data protection and security that they'd like the option to have their data stored locally. As more companies recognise design as a true differentiator, we want to provide them with secure, local infrastructure needed to build with confidence," said Scott Pugh, Vice President of Sales and General Manager, Asia Pacific, at Figma. "This investment strengthens our commitment to Australia as we continue to prioritise the needs of our Australian customers."
Figma opened its Sydney office in November 2024, marking its formal launch in the country. It now works with several established Australian businesses, including National Australia Bank (NAB), Safety Culture, and Atlassian.
The introduction of data localisation is intended to grant Australian Figma customers continued access to the platform's features, while increasing control over the physical location of their hosted data. The change is expected to specifically benefit industries subject to strict security and compliance protocols, such as public sector agencies, financial services, and healthcare providers.
"Designing simple, intuitive experiences for customers is essential to us at NAB, especially for our mobile apps and Internet banking, where more than 98% of all customer interactions now occur. Figma has been a key part of our design tooling to help us create customer-obsessed products and services. This initiative will expand the ways we can use the entire Figma suite to create even better experiences for NAB's customers," said Lance Thornswood, Chief Design Officer, National Australia Bank.
New governance features
Alongside local data hosting, Figma is launching Governance+ for enterprise customers. Governance+ is designed to provide centralised control, enhanced account security through enforced authentication, and added compliance governance features.
With Governance+, enterprise clients are able to regulate all Figma activity to ensure it occurs within approved networks and in line with company policies. Key features include an IP allowlist, network access restrictions, enforced two-factor authentication, and extended idle session timeouts. Support for multiple single sign-on (SSO) configurations is also scheduled for a future release.
The package also supports organisational data governance, providing increased visibility into Figma activity via tools such as the Discovery Pipeline. This is intended to help businesses comply with electronic communication retention standards and facilitate legal discovery processes. The offering complements Figma's existing enterprise security measures, which include action logs, SAML single sign-on, and role assignment, as well as restricting external collaborators from accessing the organisation's resources.
Governance+ is now available to all customers on Figma's Enterprise plan.
