Equinix opens first Jakarta data centre to power digital growth

Today

Equinix has opened its first International Business Exchange data centre in Jakarta, marking the company's entry into the Indonesian market through a joint venture with Astra.

The new facility, named JK1, is situated in Jakarta's Central Business District and offers access to over 50 global and local network service providers and internet exchanges. The centre forms a substantial digital ecosystem aimed at businesses operating or expanding in Indonesia.

Indonesia's digital economy is projected to reach USD $130 billion by 2025, creating a strong demand for digital infrastructure to support emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. The JK1 data centre is designed to meet such needs, providing a secure platform for rapid deployment of digital services at scale.

Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (KOMDIGI), Republic of Indonesia, commented on the launch. "As Equinix's first data centre in Indonesia, Equinix JK1 is expected to serve as a strategic gateway for global technology companies and startups to expand their investments. Indonesia has the advantage of sufficient water supply and competitive energy access, including the great potential of green energy, which is a key factor in the operational efficiency of data centres. The presence of Equinix JK1 also opens up opportunities for collaboration with national businesses, from large corporations to SMEs, in strengthening the globally connected digital ecosystem."

Ricky Kusmayadi, Deputy Minister for Investment Information Technology at the Ministry of Investment and Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), said: "The launch of Equinix's first data centre in Indonesia underscores our nation's growing attractiveness for long-term digital investment. This collaboration between global and local partners supports our vision of positioning Indonesia as a regional digital hub. We invite more investors to explore opportunities in Indonesia's data centre industry and take part in building a strong, sustainable digital infrastructure. We also welcome those committed to developing a robust and inclusive data centre ecosystem that brings lasting value to businesses and society at large."

The eight-storey JK1 facility is expected to house up to 1,600 cabinets when fully operational, with the first phase offering 550 cabinets and a total colocation space of 5,300 square metres upon completion. Connectivity at the new data centre will be supported by services such as Equinix Fabric and Equinix Internet Access, enabling local businesses to establish interconnected digital ecosystems.

Sustainability has been factored into the centre's design through the use of technologies like Cooling Array and liquid cooling systems, addressing heat management for high-density workloads required by AI applications. The facility is engineered to achieve an average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.41 at full load and will be powered 100% by renewables through the purchase of renewable energy credits. Equinix states that its global renewable coverage stands at 96% in 2024.

Cyrus Adaggra, President of Asia-Pacific at Equinix, outlined the significance of Southeast Asia for the company. "Southeast Asia is a strategic market for Equinix, and our global customers as demonstrated by the impressive lineup of customers already committed to JK1 at its inauguration. Over the past few years, Equinix has been dedicated to expanding our footprint across this vibrant region to serve the rising digital needs of our customers. With our inaugural data centre in Indonesia, we're thrilled to enhance our support for businesses looking to grow in the region, as well as empower local companies eager to make their mark on the global stage."

Indonesia's e-commerce sector is anticipated to contribute significantly to the country's digital economy, with a projected value of up to USD $120 billion by 2025. The expansion of cloud adoption is also accelerating demand for strong connectivity and high-performance digital infrastructure. Equinix believes that JK1 will play a role in Indonesia's long-term ambitions such as the Indonesia Emas 2045 vision.

Haris Izmee, Managing Director of Equinix, Indonesia, said: "E-commerce remains Indonesia's largest sector in the digital economy, with the industry potentially reaching US$120 billion in 2025. This growth is further accelerated by a remarkable surge in cloud adoption, driving the demand for robust connectivity and scalable, high-performance digital infrastructure. Furthermore, as the nation gears for Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, establishing itself as a key digital hub in Asia will be crucial for long-term economic transformation. The inauguration of JK1 serves as a major milestone for Equinix, and we remain committed to support Indonesia's broader ambitions for sustained economic growth."

Santosa, Director of Astra, stated: "Astra continues to focus on developing digitalisation to optimise the reach and quality of digital services that can be accessed by customers and the community without limitations of place and time. The combination of Equinix's expertise in digital infrastructure and Astra's extensive experience in the Indonesian market is expected to make JK1, the International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre, which was inaugurated today, capable of providing comprehensive solutions to meet the needs of businesses in Indonesia both locally and internationally."

Equinix now operates 60 data centres across 16 locations in Asia-Pacific, with its wider global footprint encompassing 270 data centres in 75 metropolitan areas and 35 countries.
