Automatic Technology unveils lighter modular 'Dave' operator

Fri, 20th Mar 2026

Automatic Technology has launched a new commercial door operator called Dave, designed to reduce installation weight, use a modular configuration, and take a wireless-first approach for key controls and safety devices.

It is positioned as a simplified alternative to commercial door operators that often require multiple models and part combinations across different door types and power requirements. Dave targets sectional doors and spring-balanced roller shutters, supports left- or right-hand mounting, and offers multiple drive and mounting arrangements.

Sam Goldstein, Global Product Strategy Manager at Automatic Technology, said the product reflects a deliberate change in approach. "The industry didn't need another operator. It needed a reset."

Lighter Install

Automatic Technology lists an install weight of under 12kg, including an installer's handle, compared with what it describes as typical commercial operator weights above 19kg. It links the lower weight to safer transport and the possibility of single-person installations.

The installer's handle is central to the physical design. It works as a carry handle and also functions as a ruler, spirit level, and straight edge. Automatic Technology says the multi-use handle reduces manual-handling risks during installation and setup.

Dave also uses a wireless-first approach for the wall console and photoelectric safety beams. This is intended to reduce installation time and allow programming at ground level. Wired options remain available for sites that require them.

One Platform

Dave follows a modular model intended to cover a wide range of commercial door configurations without switching between multiple operator variants. It can be configured for sectional or rolling doors, supports chain-and-sprocket setups, and offers direct drive for sectional doors.

Automatic Technology says the platform reduces the number of separate models compared with competitors that offer dozens of versions. It also says a single configurable approach can simplify specification and reduce inventory demands for distributors and installers.

Power requirements are handled through swappable OmniVolt power cartridges, covering global voltage options from 120V to 480V. The operator supports high- and low-voltage variants, as well as single- and three-phase supply.

Mechanically, Dave uses a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor rather than an induction motor. Automatic Technology says this improves efficiency and enables a smaller, lighter design without sacrificing lifting power or speed control.

Installation Options

Mounting and coupling options are intended to suit a broad range of site requirements. Dave supports wall and hood mounting, and can connect via shaft-to-shaft coupling or mount direct-to-axle, depending on the door configuration.

Automatic Technology says this flexibility avoids the need for on-site modifications in many installations. The design was developed through interviews, workshops, and testing with installers, distributors, and partners across multiple markets.

Tracking And Backup

Dave uses SureTrack absolute positioning, described as enabling the operator to know the exact door position. It also includes ProfileIQ machine learning, which Automatic Technology says adapts door operation as components age.

The operator includes an integrated chain hoist called LiftMate for manual operation during power outages, with automatic motor lockout for safety during manual operation.

Durability Focus

Automatic Technology says Dave is designed to be modular, repairable, and upgradeable to extend product life and reduce waste.

It also includes durable materials and fire-retardant components, and offers IP-rated protection when the drive unit is connected to the power cartridge and mounted vertically. Automatic Technology says the product has received an Australian Good Design Award.

Commercial Push

Automatic Technology describes Dave as part of a broader expansion into the global commercial market, with an emphasis on standardisation and simplified deployment across regions. It says the modular design and wide input voltage range support international distribution without adding complexity to the product range.

In Australia, the operator will have nationwide distribution, with local support and availability. Goldstein said the company aimed to tackle long-standing frustrations across the installation and supply chain.

"Installers were frustrated, distributors were overloaded, and customers were stuck with systems that hadn't fundamentally changed in decades. 'Dave' was designed to fix these issues, once and for all," said Goldstein.
