Tencent Cloud opens Silicon Valley data center; Seoul & Mumbai locations to follow

Tencent Cloud will be opening five new data centers across the globe, including centers in Seoul and Mumbai.

Tencent provides internet services in China and is seeking to open new data centers to cater to its existing client base.

The company says the new data centers will serve Chinese customers that are eyeing overseas expansion, as well as international companies who want to expand their businesses into China.

“We want to enhance our overseas cloud capability to meet the rising demand from companies around the world as they look for fast, reliable, secure and cost-effective services during the global expansion and migration to the cloud era,” comments Tencent Cloud vice president Rita Zeng.

The investment into its new data centers is also a result of rising demand for cloud services in online finance, online games, video and other internet industries.

The company cites the likes of Netmable, Aiming, Gamevil and Supercell as major mobile gaming clients.

The first of the five new centers opened in Silicon Valley this week, with the remaining four due to open this year. In addition to the Seoul and Mumbai centers, the company will also open in Frankfurt and Moscow.

The company already operates three data centers outside of mainland China. The centers are located in Hong Kong, Singapore and Toronto.

“I am confident that we can meet their needs with our technical capability, global network, as well as experience accumulated in serving the massive user-base in our home market," Zeng continues.

Tencent is also investing in the latest technologies such as cloud, security and artificial intelligence to ‘capture the next wave of growth’.

The company has also invested in its sales force and channel partners to target smaller-scale application developers. It is also helping Chinese enterprises deploy services globally.
